"Can I play too? Or is it just for boys?"
Whilst a few images may be conjured up when someone mentions the film Wild Things, a soaked and scheming looking Denise Richards is probably the most iconic.
Her character Kelly Van Ryan might easily be considered the central character of this film before its even been watched, but whilst Kelly appears a great deal in the first two thirds of the film and is key to a plot revolving around the character assisination of Sam Lombardo, played by Matt Dillon, she is soon shown to be merely a pawn. Wild by name and wild by nature, this film is full of twists and turns and a schizophrenetic set of key players.
Kelly is no exception. With her undeniably vixenish beauty, she plays the combination role of jail bait, rich bitch, spoilt brat perfectly. In contrast to this, her object of seduction, Sam, is by all accounts an upstanding, high school guidance counsellor, taking Gen X kids failed by their parents under his wing and generally behaves himself. Though not unaware of the attention he receives from beautiful women, he is decent, respectful and relatively ordinary.
Yet when Kelly emerges from his home in a torn tshirt and a distraught look on her face, it seems all the more believable that regardless of whether she intended to seduce Sam, things took a dark turn and something is terribly wrong.
Kelly is crafted as the bad girl villian, oozing confidence and enough front to go as far as to shamelessly throw herself at her teacher, so to see her appearing vulnerable and in a state of shock is quite the turn of events. Even her confession to her mother and taped testimony to the police about Sam having raped her is compelling. Could Sam really be a brute in disguise?
Not quite so, as we learn it was all a chaotic ruse the whole time with all parties involved in a get rich scheme. Though despite actually being a bad girl, Kelly is not immune to love, which ultimately becomes her undoing. Having fallen for and become devoted to Sam, she lets her guard down and he eventually has the upper hand.

Love it! You’re absolutely right when you say she looks ‘scheming’ - undeniably sexy but calculating too
