"Who knows what it's like to be me? How it calls me and screams inside of me! How I must do it! I don't want to! I must! I don't want to! I must! And then a voice screams! And I can't hear it anymore. Help! I can't! I can't. I can't! I can't!"
Residents of a German village are under threat from an unidentified, prowling, child murderer. Authorities try tirelessly to hunt them down, but seem powerless to capture this elusive stalker. Time ticks by and paranoia grows, until members of the public are forced to take matters into their own hands. Using a nifty trick to identify the culprit, who whistles to the tune of Grieg's 'In The Hall Of The Mountain King", they are narrowed down by the white chalk marking of 'M' on the back of their coat. A persuit ensues and when the accused, Hans, believes he has once again successfully evaded capture, he falls into the trap of a citizen's arrest and makeshift trial.
He'll plead, beg, point the finger at the sins of the common man and insist he couldnt control his urges.
Hans represents the unsuspecting, unextraordinary and loner figure who fades into the background. Yet his power in being an unseeming monster pushes an entire community to the edge, fearful that he may strike again at any time, anywhere.
