Not Just A Hat Rack - Lucy/Lucille

"Tastes just like candy - honest!"

Ok, I did it again. I chose a photo of Lucille Ball in an extravagant, mesmerizing hat, got carried away and a long time later realised this wasn’t from any particular film. Whoops! Yet, I assert, a forgivable whoops, since it is a fabulous hat of an array of materials and colour, well suited to an equally colourful actress.

Lucille Ball was indeed an iconic, comedic performer, but from the equally iconic clip of the accompanying reel, proven to have been ahead of her time and a perfect introduction to home entertainment. She starred alongside her real life husband, but was a woman showcasing her stand out talent and stealing the show.

Though beautiful, she wasn’t shy at letting loose to pull faces and harness slapstick, a true natural at comedy, no doubt appealing to many female viewers at the time transitioning from the role of stay-at-home mother and wife, to entering the workforce.

The Hat:

Not content with grabbing attention with her remarkable hair, deep red lips, big blue eyes and milky complexion, here she opts for a scene stealing fascinator of a hat. Pink feathers atop veiled netting falling down to the shoulders, you might think the contrast wouldn’t work, but instead of shying away, much like the appeal Lucille herself possessed, you can’t take your eyes off it!
