"You won't find anything cheap around here!"

Immediately, Cora captures the attention of Frank when he spots her framed in a doorway, head to toe perfection and dressed skimpily all in white, topped with a hat (ok, a headwrap, but its used as a hat). Little is said between the two, but things get moving along quickly enough that they embark on their love affair, make their mind up to run away together and just as quickly decide to take out Cora’s older husband Nick.

It is almost as if Cora's character needn’t be delved into, but left to have some mystery: she’s captivatingly beautiful, with an innocence in her eyes. Her fragility is alluded to when a mishap causes the lights to go out and she screams in fear of the dark. Don’t be fooled though, as there is an inner sinner lurking underneath. She takes little time to turn on her husband in favour of the love for a drifter she herself knows nothing of. Yet this is not just a one off trait it seems and provides just an inkling of who we are going to soon learn more about.

Once accused of plotting to kill Nick, she is easily able to turn on Frank, reciting a confession in jail implicating him primarily as the brains behind the crime and at another point accusing him of being “yellow”.

The pace of The Postman Always Rings Twice is rapid, the story line moving from deadly affair, plot to kill, courtroom drama, to Cora and Frank wound up in a world of scheming and drama.

The Hat:

Ok, the headwrap! Nevertheless, Cora is partial to a head covering. In fact, the hat/wrap comes in two colours: white and black. Primarily, Cora adorns white and along with her bleached blonde hair, she displays purity and innocence in her attire, never giving up too much information about her true self. The hat/wrap is a fabulous way to keep any secrets she may be hiding!

It will come off eventually though and noticeably so during the times when the stakes are high for Cora. Whether she’s struggling to walk in heels on an eventually failed hitchhike with Frank, or she’s facing a courtroom for murder, she can’t keep hiding under her hat/wrap.

She’s back in the hat/wrap after the trial has ended in victory for both her and Frank, returning with him to run her café, keeping things strictly business between them both. Yet her woes aren’t over and upon returning from visiting her ill mother, who subsequently dies, Cora is almost in the exact same outfit she is usually wearing, only this time all in black. This remains on when she is faced with being blackmailed, soon adding the accessory of a gun to the cunning and dangerous side of her persona.

When all is well again, she’ll opt for white, head covering included, but all the white in the world won’t provide a happy ending for this devil in disguise!

Warming to the head-wrap! I guess I see it as a really soft hat :)
