"We're not trying to hurt her ... We're trying to help her!"
Sue is our survivor. She has tried and tried as best she can to involve outcast loner Carrie into some
sense of a sociable realm. Sue has her work cut out for her though, in that she has to juggle
potentially alienating herself from her own social circle, convince her popular boyfriend to take
Carrie to the prom, whilst also convincing the teacher that she isn’t playing some cruel trick. Sue is
neutral, empathetic, a mediator and peacemaker. Oddly enough, and perhaps this is her downfall,
she rarely if at all has any interaction with Carrie herself. Her involvement in tormenting Carrie at the
start of the film, by going along with the herd and attacking her with tampons and sanitary towels,
suggests Sue is making it her mission to do what she can for redemption. This is perhaps why she doesn’t get let off completely and is left the only one behind to experience Carrie’s wrath from beyond the grave.
